Come rollerski in 2008 Coming up - With summer coming up, now's a good time to get in shape and keep thoughts of skiing going over the summer. Even if you have no interest in skiing, now is a good time to try a different workout - and get fit outdoors. Now the clocks have gone forward, our evening sessions are under way in Hyde Park. The rollerski race and tour season begins in May. We have advanced courses with Alan Eason starting in Hyde Park and Dorney Lake in April. If you're a beginner, our courses will see you develop good technique - which is easily transferrable onto snow - and for more experienced skiers, our Level 2 courses and Club sessions will push you physically and improve you technically. Read on for more - COURSES Choose between a 1-day course at Dorney Lake near Windsor, or one of our 4-week courses in Hyde Park. Practically all of our courses are suitable for beginners - our occasional Level 2 courses are geared to more advanced skiers. We recommend our courses as the best way to achieve rapid improvement in skills. For a full listing of courses, see www.rollerski.co.uk/events.html
CLASSES We do 2-hr group classes in Hyde Park and Richmond Park in London, and Dorney Lake near Windsor. These offer a chance to give rollerskiing a go for the first time, or have a refresher session. Evening sessions take place on Wednesdays in Hyde Park. To book a class, go to www.rollerski.co.uk/class.html
PRIVATE INSTRUCTION FOR INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS We also arrange private rollerski sessions for individuals and groups. This is a good way to fit rollerskiing into your own schedule, and we offer sessions on weekdays and at the weekend. In 2007 we did sessions for office teambuilding groups, the British military and a couple of schools. For more information and to book, see www.rollerski.co.uk/instructprivate.html
SKI HOLIDAYS AND SKI MARATHONS The reason many people decide to have a go at rollerskiing is that it's the perfect preparation for cross-country skiing! In 2007 we helped people prepare for a wide range of cross-country ski holidays, and also for some of the biggest ski marathon races in Europe. In the case of one Alex Marfin, we helped him reduce his time for the Engadin ski marathon by over 2.5hrs! In 2007 he covered the 42k course in just over 3hrs. Other XC ski related races include Winter Triathlon, winter Adventure Races and Arctic Challenges. For ideas on ski holidays click here.
CLUB We know we have succeeded in our 4-wk courses when people decide to join our club sessions. Each Saturday morning we do a different training session on rollerskis, designed to push skiers outside their comfort zones. In 2007 we had various guest coaches along, including Les Parsons (the first coach of Canadian Olympian, Beckie Scott) and Peter Kuznetsov (former member of the Moscow University cross-country ski team). Having started this in 2006, we now have 15 committed regulars, most who have only recently learnt to ski, and covering a wide range of standards. At the top we have folk who have raced at the British Cross-Country Ski and Biathlon Championships and various on-snow ski marathons, while others just enjoy the unrivalled workout rollerskiing provides. See www.rollerski.co.uk/club.html for further information. We aim to have fun, and the team is a friendly lot. We work hard and have good banter!
WIDER ROLLERSKI & CROSS-COUNTRY SKI WORLD We provide good instruction and build up skills and speed on rollerskis in friendly surroundings. But we always encourage skiers to get involved in the wider world of rollerskiing and cross-country skiing. Various clubs exist around the country offering rollerski touring and racing - the London Region Nordic Ski Club is based in Greater London and the Wessex Biathlon and Nordic Ski Club is based in Wiltshire. Both offer great opportunities for racing and touring on rollerskis and on snow. The British Masters Cross-Country Ski Club runs summer training for racing-oriented skiers (both for masters and younger skiers).
