London 4-hour rollerski race

The UK's longest rollerski race took place on 21st October. Congratulations to all who took part, in particular the large number of novice skiers.

GB rollerski series final standings

Congratulations to all who took part in the 2006 GB rollerski series, in particular the Series Champions:

Senior Men - Mike Dixon (Cairngorm BNSC) - 500 pts.
Senior Ladies - Fiona Crossley (Cairngorm BNSC) - 440 pts.
U18 Men - Cameron Dudgeon (Cairngorm BNSC) - 400 pts.
U18 Ladies - Fiona Hughes (Yorkshire Dales CCSC) - 380 pts.
U14 Boys - Callum Smith (Huntly NSC) - 400 pts.
U14 Girls - Alison Duncan (Cairngorm BNSC) - 425 pts.

A total of 117 people (76 adults, 41 juniors) took part in the Series compared to 101 in 2005. Peter Thorn has requested feedback on the series and suggestions for 2007. You can contact him here.

Lancaster Rollerski Races - 30.9.6 - Race 7 GB Series

There was a small but widely drawn field for the closing event of the GB Rollerski Series, held at Salt Ayre sports centre in Lancaster. The rain held off, allowing for fast conditions, and some interesting starts, which took place in 'waves'. This was the first race to be held under the sponsorship of Waymark Holidays, who provided some very smart (but not entirely flattering - IB) bibs.

British Rollerski Championships, Durham - 3.9.6 - Race 5 GB Series

The rain held off for a good meeting on Sunday morning's racing. International skier Karolina Bicova of the Czech Republic (and the London Region Nordic Ski Club) proved her credentials, winning the womens race by 11 minutes and beating all but four of the mens' times.

Mike Dixon again won the mens race, with young racers Alex Standen and Andrew Musgrave from Scotland closing the gap.

The GB Rollerski Series 2006 got under way on Sat 3rd June at the Huntly Nordic & Outdoor Centre with the Huntly Nordic Ski Club (HNSC) Rollerski Sprints. Thirty-seven skiers from the Huntly Nordic & Cairngorm Biathlon & Nordic Ski Clubs were joined by skiers from the RAF & Army. A further four skiers took part in the age group finals later in the day when they were relieved from marshalling & timekeeping duties.

The races started with time trial sprints over a "flat" 655m & 1135m "Hill" courses. These time were added together to decide the GB Series race. Remarkably the first three places were taken by under 18 skiers (Andrew Young (HNSC), Andrew Musgrave (HNSC) & Alistair Duncan (CBNSC)) who just beat Olympian Mike Dixon (CBNSC) into fourth place. Although now a veteran, retired from competitive skiing & not in full training it was a tremendous achievement for these young skiers to beat Mike & a healthy sign that we have some talented juniors coming up through the ranks. Skiers like Mike are always a target for these young skiers. First lady home Sarah Young (HNSC) is also under 18. In second place was another Huntly skier Posy Musgrave just moved up into the senior ranks. Fiona Crossley travelled up from Yorkshire to take third place & 1st female veteran despite a nasty tumble on the hill. Cairngorm brought a large contingent of young skiers who have greatly improved since their last visit to the Huntly races.

After the time trial races there were open knock-out races over the same sprint courses. With three skiers competing head to head there were some extremely competitive races. The semi-final with Alistair Duncan just holding off the last gasp challenge from Andrew Musgrave got the spectators excited for the final. In the final Mike Dixon took and held a lead of 5m from Andrew Young with Alistair Duncan struggling to keep with the early pace. However on the final uphill with 250m to go Duncan in a fantastic overtaking manouvre burst through a small gap while Dixon & Young tangled with each other. Duncan built a few metre lead which he held to win a hugely exciting final from the two pre-race favourites. The Novice knock-out final was won by Stuart Hamna (RAF) who has only been rollerskiing for a few weeks from Huntly newcomer Megan Heathershaw. The day finished with a series of age group finals.

Thanks to the Huntly Nordic & Outdoor Centre (Aberdeenshire Council) for using their facility for the races. Next race at Huntly are the Scottish Rollerski Championships (GB Series Race 6) on Sat 16th Sept. These will be followed on the Sunday by a Rollerski Hill-Climb hosted by the Cairngorm Biathlon & Nordic SC on the Ski Road, Aviemore.

London Series Race 2 - 21.5.6

This race took place amid torrential rain, in drought afflicted West London! Yet another strong performance from series leader Alan Eason means he takes 20 points again.

Irene Chawko leads the ladies series, despite a strong debut performance by military skier Anna Barker.

London Series Race 1 - 23.4.6

This was a 10k / 5k classic race on matched rollerskis, at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, West London. Results are as follows:
