Roller ski races this weekend

This Sunday sees the second race in the London Region Nordic Ski Club's summer race series. The season got off to an interesting start last month, with race organiser Chris Richards emerging as winner in the 10km classic race.

Numbers attending the race are expected to be up on last month - this being the last London race before the club's leg of the GB rollerski series in July.

The format of the race is a 15k skate, with a shorter 5k option for novices and juniors.

The race starts at 3pm, and spectators are welcome. For a map to the venue, Hillingdon Cycle Circuit (in Minet Country Park, near J3 of the M4), see here.

Entry forms, contact details and further information can be found on the club's website, www.londonnordic.org.uk or our racing page. The cost of the race is £6 in advance or £10 on the day.

Meanwhile in Scotland...

The Scottish scene goes from strength to strength if the most recent Huntly newsletter is anything to go by. Here's an extract report on some gutsy performances at the Land Rover Balmoral Rollerski Challenge -

'In a repetition of last year’s successful event (see Newsletter 22), four of Norway’s best young skiers, from the Kjelsås Club, along with their coach, were invited to put on a display of rollerskiing & to compete in a head-to-head madison relay against some of our best junior skiers at the Run Balmoral event on 28th April.

'First off there were a couple of relays involving combined teams of Norwegians & British juniors from Huntly & Cairngorm clubs. A short course in front of the castle included jumps, slaloms &, as always, the “Roy Polloi” roundabout. These two relays kept the large crowd entertained with some very exciting racing including a finish that saw Al Duncan just keep ahead of Alex Standen by a toenail & a spectacular crash by Callum Smith. He did a ‘Petter Northug’ & planted his pole between or on his ski & thudded into the tarmac. He was back up on his feet in seconds & chased after the other skier. His only concern afterwards was a hole in his race suit, but it must have been sore!

'In the main event (the head-to-head between the Norwegians & a team of Musgrave, Standen, Duncan & Young) our juniors stole a couple of metres on the Norwegians before the first jump establishing a lead that the Norwegians were unable to claw back.'
