Marwe production on a roll

It seems that word is getting out on our favourite skating roller skis! According to Olli Welander, manager at Marwe Rollerskis, sales so far in 2007 have exceeded total sales for the whole of 2006.

Marwe is the rollerski brand of the much less pronounceable Hyvinkään Kumi Oy - a Finnish engineering firm, specialising in the precision production of rubber products. From its factory 60km north of Helsinki, Marwe rollerskis are exported to shops across the world.

Marwes have a worldwide reputation for quality and longevity, and are highly regarded for their 'ski feel'. The Marwe Skating 610 rollerski is a particular favourite of national ski and biathlon teams, for their similarity to skate skiing on snow. In the summer you can see many of the world's best skiers out training on Marwe 610s on rollerski tracks, such as Ruhpolding in Germany. Marwes are favoured by the British biathlon team and many other British and commonwealth skiers.

The relatively small volumes and precision nature of the production means that Marwes are not the least expensive of rollerskis, but they are of fantastic quality, which means second hand skis are always in demand.

Growth has come about pretty much by word of mouth, with the rollerski industry lacking the distribution networks and marketing muscle of the big ski brands. But despite this, the news is definitely getting out, and our 2007 sales in the UK reflect the general worldwide sales growth.

Why can't you buy rollerskis in the shops?

Rollerskiing in the UK has historically been a niche of a niche sport, cross-country skiing - and not really promoted to a wider audience.

The explosion of interest in biathlon coverage on Eurosport, and cross-country ski holidays, has sparked an interest in rollerskiing in the UK. We find that once you try rollerskiing, as long as you have a skiing or fitness goal (eg ski holiday, ski marathon, etc) you will want to do more.

With the efforts going into promoting rollerskiing, we hope more ski shops will stock and sell rollerskis. But it's a chicken and egg situation - shops won't sell rollerskis without some demand, and unless people know about rollerskiing, they won't go into shops and ask!

In the meantime, we would direct you to our shop where you can buy Marwe rollerskis, and packages.
